Causes of Bruises

Any experienced parent, grandparent or healthcare professional can attest to the fact that children bruise rather easily.  A simple review of medical literature reveals many non-abusive causes of bruising and several medical findings that can mimic bruises:

  • Mongolian Spots (usually seen on buttocks and lower back)
  • Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
  • Erythema Multiforme Hypersensitivity Vasculitis
  • Phytophotodermatitis
  • Millipedes Secretions
  • Contact Dermatitis and Allergic Reactions
  • Lice, Crabs (injection of anticoagulant under the skin can cause deposit of hemosiderin)
  • Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura
  • Henoch-Schonlein Purpura
  • Hemophilia
  • Von Willebrand’s
  • Leukemia
  • Vitamin K Deficiency
  • Ingestion of Anticoagulants
  • Normal Childhood Accidents & Injuries
